FAQ – Lightweight Tents & Tarps
What is the difference between a tent and a tarp?
A tent offers all-around protection with a floor, mosquito net, and outer shell. A tarp is a stretched tarp without a floor—lighter, more flexible to set up, but less protection in heavy rain or against insects. Tarps are well suited for experienced bivouac campers in mild conditions.
At what weight is a tent considered lightweight?
Under 1.5 kg is considered lightweight, under 1 kg ultralight. For solo trips, under 900 g is a realistic goal with modern materials like DCF. For duo trips, under 1.2 kg for both people.
How waterproof does a trekking tent need to be?
For Central European conditions, 1500–2000 mm water column is sufficient. For more demanding conditions (high mountains, continuous rain), we recommend at least 3000 mm. More important than the rating: fully taped seams and a good inner tent design.
