FAQ – Crampons & Gaiters
What's the difference between crampons and ice axes?
Crampons are lightweight spike systems for regular winter hiking trails with icy and hardpack snow sections. Ice axes are heavy, rigid systems for alpine terrain, glacier tours and steep ice walls. Crampons fit on normal hiking boots, ice axes require special soles.
Do gaiters fit all shoes?
Gaiters come in size ranges (S/M/L) and are attached to shoes with velcro straps, hooks or elastic. Most models fit standard hiking boots. Pay attention to the fit for your shoe model – check the product description if needed.
When do I need crampons?
As soon as trails are icy or covered with hardpack snow – typically October to April at mid elevations, year-round above 1500 m. Paths on north-facing slopes and in shade can also be icy even in summer.
