Waterproof Backpack: What does waterproof really mean?

Wasserdichter Rucksack bei Regen auf Bergtour

"Waterproof" is printed on almost every hiking backpack — but what does it really mean? The difference between water-repellent, water-resistant, and truly waterproof determines whether your gear stays dry.

Water-repellent vs. water-resistant vs. waterproof

Term Water column What it means Withstands...
Water-repellent (DWR) <1,000mm Seams and fabric not sealed Drizzle (short duration)
Water-resistant 1,000–5,000mm Fabric coated, seams partially sealed Light rain (30 min)
Waterproof (Outdoor) 5,000–10,000mm Coated, sealed seams Heavy rain (2h+)
Fully waterproof >10,000mm Roll closure, welded seams Underwater / continuous rain

What does the water column mean?

The water column indicates how many millimeters of water pressure a fabric can withstand. 5,000mm means: A 5m high water column can be pressed directly onto the fabric without it leaking. For hiking in low mountain ranges, a water column of 3,000–5,000mm is sufficient. In high mountains or during continuous rain, it should be 10,000mm+ or more.

Backpack Zipper: The weakest link

Even a "waterproof" backpack with 10,000mm fabric can get wet through leaky zippers. Truly waterproof backpacks have either:

  • Waterproof zippers (expensive, stiff)
  • Or a roll closure (dry-bag principle, 100% waterproof)

Rain cover or waterproof backpack?

  • Rain cover (backpack cover): Affordable, fits any backpack, quick to put on. Protects from the outside but not against condensation from the inside.
  • Waterproof backpack: Integrated protection, no extra weight from cover, but more expensive.
  • Internal solution: Dry bags for electronics and sleeping bag — best combination for any backpack.

Buying tips for waterproof hiking backpacks

  • Water column: At least 5,000mm for outdoor tours
  • Seams: Fully-taped (all seams sealed) is standard on good models
  • Closure: Roll closure for absolute protection, YKK Aquaguard zipper as a compromise
  • Weight: A good waterproof 30L backpack should weigh under 1,000g
