Sleeping bag liner & hostel sleeping bag: Everything you need to know

Schlafsack und Hüttenschlafsack-Inlett für Berghütten

Planning a mountain hut trek or multi-day hike? Then the question arises: do you take a full sleeping bag or is a hostel sleeping bag (liner) enough? This guide explains the difference, when each option makes sense — and what to look out for when buying.

What is a hostel sleeping bag?

A hostel sleeping bag — also often called a liner, sleep sack, or sleeping bag insert — is a lightweight inner sleeping bag made of cotton, silk, or synthetic fiber. It serves primarily as hygiene protection in huts, hostels, and shared accommodations.

Unlike a full sleeping bag, it offers little thermal insulation — it is designed for temperatures of 18–22°C and won't keep you warm if it gets cold.

What to consider when buying?

Material

  • Cotton: Affordable, breathable, but heavy and slow drying
  • Silk: Lightest material (from 80g), feels luxurious, more expensive
  • Microfiber/polyester: Best value for money, quick drying
  • Merino wool: Natural, odor-resistant, temperature-regulating — ideal for multi-day tours

Fit

Mummy shape insulates better; quilt style is more comfortable. For huts, quilt style is perfectly sufficient.

Zipper

Important! A full-length zipper allows you to use the liner as a bed sheet.

Purchase recommendation by use

  • Mountain hut hike (warm season): Silk or microfiber liner is sufficient — light, compact
  • Alpine crossing: Combine liner + lightweight down sleeping bag (3-season)
  • Winter hut: Full sleeping bag with comfort temperature 0°C to −5°C
  • Bivouac / tent: Down sleeping bag, no liner needed

Frequently asked questions about hostel sleeping bags

Do I have to bring my own sleeping bag to the hut?

Many Alpine huts require your own sleeping bag or hostel sleeping bag. A liner is usually sufficient — ask the hut beforehand.

Can I sleep in a liner when it's cold?

A silk liner increases your sleeping bag's comfort temperature by approximately 3–5°C. On its own, it is not suitable for temperatures below 15°C.

How do I care for a hostel sleeping bag?

Most liners are washable at 60°C. Silk only 30°C delicate wash. Always dry thoroughly after trips.
