You need your hands free and don't want to carry the poles? Properly stowing trekking poles on your backpack is easier than you think — if you know the right method.
Method 1: Side mesh pockets
Most hiking backpacks have side mesh pockets that are perfect for trekking poles. Important: Always point the tip downward — protects other hikers and prevents injuries.
Method 2: Bungee cord top + bottom
Modern backpacks often have a bungee cord on the front. Insert the pole, thread it through the cord at the top, push it through a loop at the bottom. Also works for telescoping poles that can be compressed.
Method 3: One-handed clamping method (on the trail)
For short stretches: Clamp the pole diagonally through the shoulder strap. Not suitable for steep terrain — can slip. Only for flat sections where you need your hands briefly.
Method 4: Specialized pole holders
Retrofittable holders made of rubber or plastic (€10–20) clip onto the backpack straps and hold poles securely horizontally. Ideal if your backpack doesn't have good side pockets.
Important safety rules
- Always point the tip downward or into a protective cover
- Pole must not stick higher than your head
- In crowded areas (hut, bus) always store horizontally or in a bag
- Compress telescoping poles before stowing
Which backpack works best?
Backpacks with side mesh pockets and front cord are most practical for trekking poles. A good hiking backpack makes attaching and removing poles possible in seconds — without taking off the backpack.
