With a size of up to 40 liters, you can usually take your travel bag on the plane as hand luggage. For longer trips, there are of course travel bags with a volume of 120 liters and more, but it should be noted that very large travel bags should always have wheels, as they are often quite impractical to handle without wheels.
What material should the travel bag be made of?
There are various materials that are suitable for travel bags. Which material is best for you depends largely on the intended use.
Most travel bags are made of polyester, as these fibers are UV-resistant and easy to clean. However, nylon is also frequently used to make travel bags. This material is more hard-wearing but, unlike polyester, is not really UV-resistant. In order to combine the best properties of both fibers, a blend of nylon and polyester is often used. The advantage is a very low weight and high resistance. In addition to the nylon and polyester travel bags, there is also the more elegant leather version. The leather makes the bag hard-wearing and looks visually appealing and elegant. However, leather travel bags require more care and are usually heavier.
Canvas travel bags are also very popular. However, canvas travel bags are more difficult to clean and are also heavier. On the other hand, they are quite robust. Another material that some manufacturers, including us, use is truck tarpaulin or ripstop nylon. This offers very high durability and is waterproof. Travel bags, duffle bags and sports bags made from ripstop nylon are therefore ideal for camping and multi-day hiking trips. They are easy to clean and the contents stay dry even in bad weather.
The most important purchase criteria
Ultimately, there is a very large selection of travel bags. For this reason, it is best to look at the different criteria in detail before buying. Above all, you should keep your intended use in mind.
- Quality is a decisive criterion. The travel bag, duffle bag or sports bag must be made from a high-quality material and have a good finish. Sports bags and travel bags for camping and the like should also be waterproof or at least water-repellent.
- The equipment should include several outer pockets as well as inner pockets and a carrying strap or backpack system. The pockets can be used to store your wallet, smartphone and camera, for example. In order to always have these quickly to hand, these outer pockets should ideally be able to be opened and closed with a zipper. Travel bags with more than 120 liters should also be equipped with wheels
- The carrying device should always include carrying straps and a shoulder strap. Ideally, the travel bag should be equipped with a backpack system.
