FAQ – Sleeping pads

What is the R-value for sleeping pads?

The R-value measures insulation performance – higher is warmer. R1–2: Summer/warm nights. R3–4: Three-season tours. R5+: Winter and snow. For alpine tours from autumn onwards, we recommend at least R3.5.

Inflatable or foam – which should I choose?

Inflatable mats are lighter, more compact and more comfortable – ideal for multi-day tours. Foam mats are cheaper, more durable and carry no puncture risk – good for huts, bivouacking on rough terrain and as a backup. For ultralight tours: inflatable. For beginners and groups: foam.

How do I repair a hole in an inflatable sleeping pad?

Locate the leak under water, dry thoroughly, apply the repair patch from the repair kit with the supplied adhesive and allow to dry for 24 hours. A repair kit belongs in every bivouac pack.
